A 2026 recall notice from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says small metal wire bristles can detach from recalled Weber grill brushes and stick to the grill or food. This guide covers what the notice says, what owners of recalled brushes should do, and how to clean grates with less risk. Where a step does not come from the notice or a manual, the text says it is practical advice.
What the CPSC recall notice says
The recall notice is dated February 26, 2026. It says this recall involves the metal wire bristle grill brushes with plastic or wood handles. It also says small metal wire bristles can detach from the brushes, stick to the grill or food, posing an ingestion hazard.
The notice says that Weber is aware of at least 38 reports and reviews where small wire bristles detached from the grill brushes. It includes four reports of consumers who swallowed metal bristles and sought medical treatment. It also refers to a risk of serious internal injuries that could require surgery.
If you own one of the recalled brushes
- Stop using it. The notice says consumers should immediately stop using the recalled grill brushes.
- Discard it. The notice says consumers will be asked to discard the recalled grill brushes.
- Ask for a replacement. The notice says to contact Weber for a cold cleaning nylon bristle grill brush replacement.
- Report incidents. The CPSC page asks readers to report a dangerous product or product-related injury on www.SaferProducts.gov.
Check the grate and food before you cook
Practical advice: before you light the grill, look over the grate for bristles that have come loose, and check any food you pick up from the grate before you eat it.
Clean the grate with less risk
The Weber Genesis 3-burner guide describes cleaning the cooking grill while it is hot. After preheating, while the grill is very hot, it says to use a grill brush to scrape any solid debris from the cooking grill. The cleaning instruction does not name a bristle material.
The guide’s accessories section describes a 3 Sided grill brush as having a round head full of metal bristles. That is an accessory the guide describes, not a statement about the recalled brushes.
The same guide says to use a pair of long handled tongs to rub a cloth or paper towel over the grill bars to remove any excess grease. It also says to always wear heat proof gloves or mitts.
For the Flavorizer bars, the guide says to wait for the barbecue to cool, then brush the ashes off the bars using a Weber grill brush.
- Practical advice: replace any brush whose bristles are loose or missing.
- Practical advice: choose a brush with nylon or other non-wire bristles, the same material the recall notice gives for its replacement.
- Practical advice: look at the grate again after brushing, before food goes on.
If you ever do have a fat fire in your GENESIS, the guide says to turn the gas off at the source and open the lid. It also says never to throw water on a fat fire. For what causes flare-ups, see flare-up prevention.
Limits of this guidance
This guide relies on one CPSC recall notice and one Weber owner’s guide. It does not cover other brands or brush types. For choosing a brush and cleaning tools, see choosing the right grill brush and cleaning tools. For cleaning by grate material, see how to clean grill grates.
