This guide covers placement, power, and setup for outdoor electric grills, based on two owner’s manuals and a 2026 federal recall notice. It also explains what those manuals do and do not say about heat zones.
Heat zones: what the manuals describe
The sections of both manuals read for this guide do not describe separate heat zones. The Vida start-up step says to turn the controller knob clockwise to the MAX. position. The Char-Broil start-up step says to turn the knob clockwise, after which the indicator light should come on. The Vida manual says electric grills are expected to reach temperatures similar to gas grills, but that shielding from wind and a closed lid matter. Practical advice: if your model has separate controls for different parts of the cooking area, learn them from that model’s manual before planning a two-zone cook.
Placement and clearance
The Vida manual calls for 61 cm (24 inches) of clearance to combustible materials on all sides. The Char-Broil manual says to keep the grill 24 inches (2 feet) away from walls and rails. The Vida manual says not to use the grill under any overhang, siding, or other combustible material. The Vida manual says not to use the grill within 3 m (10 feet) of any body of water. The Char-Broil manual says not to use the grill within 10 feet of a pool, pond, or other body of water. The Vida manual says not to position the grill in a windy location. It also says to keep the grill on a level surface so grease flows into the tray. Practical advice: pick a spot away from walls, rails, and water, out of the wind, and check the cord route before you plug in.
Power, cords, and outdoor use
The Vida manual states “THIS ELECTRIC GRILL IS FOR OUTDOOR USE ONLY.” The Char-Broil cover says “FOR OUTDOOR USE ONLY.” The Char-Broil manual says to use the grill only on a GFI-protected circuit. The Vida manual asks for a GFCI-protected outdoor receptacle. It recommends a 15 to 20 A circuit breaker on the outlet being used. The Char-Broil manual says never to use the grill with an adapter to two prongs. If an extension cord is used, the Vida manual says to use one with the suffix W, marked for outdoor appliances. The Vida manual also gives a maximum extension cord length of 6 m (20 feet). The Char-Broil manual says not to use 16 or 18 gauge extension cords. The Vida manual says to arrange the cord so it does not drape over a countertop or tabletop where it can be pulled on or tripped over. The Char-Broil manual says to keep the controller dry and not share its circuit, to avoid tripping household breakers.
Setup, preheat, and shutdown
The Vida start-up steps say to plug the power cord into a grounded electrical outlet. The same steps say to close the lid and preheat for 20 minutes before use. The Vida preheating section says colder temperatures and wind can lengthen preheating. To turn the Char-Broil grill off, the manual says to turn the controller knob fully counterclockwise to OFF. It then says to unplug the cord from the outlet. The Vida shutdown says to let the grill cool before covering it for storage. The Vida manual says to clean the grease tray every 3 to 4 uses.
The 2026 CPSC recall notice
The CPSC recall lists nine model numbers: 25302145, 25302146, 25302147, 25302148, 25302149, 25302150, 25302151, 25302159, and 25302163. The recall covers only Bistro Pro grills with date codes 2510, 2511, and 2512. The model in the Char-Broil manual is 25302177. The CPSC page says model number 25302177 is not listed on this recall page. The hazard statement says the grounding wire for the heating element can disconnect and lose fault protection. The CPSC page lists the recall date as September 17, 2026. The page reports no incidents. The remedy says to stop using the recalled grills immediately and contact Char-Broil for a free repair kit. Practical advice: check the model number and date code on the label of your grill before deciding whether to keep using it.
